When you’re potting electronics, sometimes you have irregular surfaces, side entries, and other problems that would prohibit you from sinking the electronics in a container to pot them with. I wanted to find a solution for this.
The solution came when I was in the ER for one of the many things I end up there for, and I noticed on my IV, the skin could breathe. I was curious if this meant silicone could breathe, too. After asking for some from the ER, I tried it out, the answer was YES!
I found some tegaderm online for real cheap (less than $1/patch) bought it and now I’m potting all of my stuff in it!
1) This silicone (GE Silicone II) does not outgas acetic acid (at least not much if at all). Most silicones I’ve dealt with that were purchased recently use other chemicals. I’ve been using this method for over a year and haven’t had ANY issues with the chips functioning.
2) I do not use two-part silicone since I’ve tried this once with Q-sil 216. It didn’t work out well at all.
3) Conformal coats are unnecessary. These parts have been thrown into laptop bags, dropped off everything nada. Actually, I developed this process because I was having trouble with naked boards breaking.
